ARE YOU LUCKY?

You may occasionally hear about people who are always lucky. You may have a friend that you consider to be always lucky- in love, in career, in fortune or in circumstance. That is s/he is always at the right place at the right time.

Do you wish you were that lucky? You can develop your luckiness as long as you are mindful of your “self” and your social surroundings. In essence it is a state of mind and it is mindfully triggered in different environments. If you think this way often enough it actually becomes a reality. You will gradually notice a move away from being unlucky to becoming lucky.

Dr Maxwell Maltz once claimed that if you pretend to be something or someone long enough, over time you will psychologically become what you wish for. In that sense it is fitting to see the general characteristics of lucky people.

Professor Richard Wiseman researched this area for a number of years and found that there were a number of qualities that lucky people displayed, these included: a spirited awareness of their surroundings, little to no anxiety, optimistic, extroverted personalities, open-mindedness, confident communicators in strange environments and frequently displaying a happy and smiling disposition.

It is generally acknowledged that these sorts of personality traits attract people to you. They rarely push people away. Therefore, it exposes these people to new friendships and acquaintances and in turn to new opportunities.

Lucky people tend to embrace the new circumstances that they find themselves in and take advantage of the opportunities that are placed before them. They tend to chase up leads given to them and are generally discreetly persistent and determined. Lucky people listen attentively and are intuitive. They take advice on board and ask good and pertinent questions at appropriate times.

It is often said that there is no word for “crisis” in Chinese, only “opportunity.” Lucky people, in an unintentional manner, see opportunity where pessimistic people only see misfortune or nothing at all.

The good news is that if you feel you do not have these qualities then we know that you can slowly but surely develop these qualities if you are mindful of it. You can seek an inner desire to change your situation and your luck.

FORMULA FOR SUCCESS WHILST STUDYING

Whether you are a HSC student or a tertiary student and at whatever age, there is a formula that I have developed that has been tried and tested for many years. Former clients who have followed the formula have found it beneficial in attaining the results that they needed.

This space does not allow me to write out the details but it allows me to put forward a framework of questions for you to consider:

1. Why are you studying or undertaking a course? What do you hope to gain out of this process upon completion?

2. What short-term and long-term goals have you set up for yourself? Are they appropriate? What back up plan do you have?

3. Do you have a home-study timetable?

4. How much time do you spend studying each day/night?

5. Do you break up the activities in a systematic manner to help you enhance and consolidate your learning?

6. What is your physical learning environment like? What is the most ideal learning/study environment?

7. Do you study with music in the background? What type of music is it?

8. Do you write out your assessment task the day before it’s due?

9. Do you like studying with friends or going it alone?

10. How often do you go out during the week or week-ends?

11. How often do you work during the week and at what times?

12. How often do you exercise?

13. Can diet enhance your study technique?

I use these questions to gain an insight to one’s current study methods. Everyone has their own system, but by tweaking it and informing people on what methods will enhance their study, clients can gain enormous benefits and results from minor adjustments. It’s a little bit like a coach aiming to improve the performance of an athlete. The coach’s job is to suggest strategies for the athlete to adopt so as to advance their performance and ultimately their on-field results.

EMPLOYMENT IN AN ECONOMIC DOWNTURN

The economic down turn may effect the employment rate in Australia in the near future.

There are a number of occupational areas that are almost recession proof in our society. Some of these include: education, health, police, community welfare, law, agribusiness, childcare and several others.

If you are not in these industries, there are still a number of strategies that you can adopt in the workplace to minimise the chance of becoming unemployed.

Firstly, it is a great time to go back and update your skills and develop new ones at TAFE or university. Try and excel at what you do in the workplace. Have a positive attitude rather than a negative one. Volunteer to do small jobs/projects without being asked to do them. This will show your ability to multi-skill. Employers tend to keep people who can do more than one job and who have a positive and contributing outlook. Be more rather than want more.

Secondly, networking is vital in this economic climate. Networking is about sharing information, ideas, resources and also job opportunities with others. It’s not what you know that comes into play here, it’s who you know. Regularly networking with people in other industries or companies in the same field can pay enormous dividends. When networking, do pay attention to what you can give or contribute rather than what you can take. That will then make you stand out from the rest.
